Website delivery and security
Your browser sends your IP address, the requested address and technical request headers, such as browser information and, depending on your settings, the referring page. Connection data are necessary to deliver the website and its media. No account is required.
The intended legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR: our legitimate interest in reliably providing the website and preventing misuse.
The website runs no server of ours and writes no log files of its own. Our host, Cloudflare, processes the connection data to deliver the pages and to stop attacks. The privacy policy of Cloudflare states its storage periods: cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.
Hosting and recipients
The website is hosted by Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St., San Francisco, CA 94107, United States (Cloudflare Pages). Cloudflare delivers the pages and media through its worldwide network, usually from a data centre near you. Cloudflare processes the connection data on our behalf under its data processing addendum.
Data can reach the United States and other countries outside the EEA in this process. Cloudflare, Inc. is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework; the adequacy decision of the European Commission of 10 July 2023 applies to the United States. For other countries, the data processing addendum contains the standard contractual clauses of the European Commission. A copy: cloudflare.com/cloudflare-customer-dpa.
Theme preference cookie
Choosing light or dark mode stores rhenium-theme with the value light or dark. It applies across this website and expires one year after your most recent selection. Without a stored choice, the site follows your device preference.
The cookie remembers the display mode you explicitly request. For this purpose, the intended basis for storage and access is Section 25(2)(2) TDDDG. Associated personal-data processing relies on Article 6(1)(f) GDPR, our interest in preserving your chosen display setting.
You can delete or block the cookie in your browser settings. The site remains usable but will no longer remember your choice.
Media and usage measurement
The website application serves fonts, images and product films from its own origin. It includes no advertising trackers, analytics service, external video player or contact form. It does not use local storage or session storage for visitor profiles.
Interactive examples run in your browser. The website application does not use their inputs for profiling or automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects.
Newsletter
The newsletter form at the foot of each page is handled by Buttondown. When you subscribe, your browser sends your email address directly to Buttondown, LLC, 406 W Franklin St. #201, Richmond, VA 23221, United States. Buttondown stores the address and sends the newsletter for us. Its servers also receive connection data such as your IP address.
The privacy policy of Buttondown applies to the form and to the newsletter: buttondown.com/legal/privacy.
The legal basis is your consent under Article 6(1)(a) GDPR, which you give with the checkbox in the form. You can withdraw it at any time: use the unsubscribe link in a newsletter or write to us.
After you send the form, Buttondown sends you an email. Your subscription starts when you confirm it with the link in that email. After you unsubscribe, Buttondown deletes your address from its database after 30 days.
Buttondown processes the data on our behalf under its data processing agreement, which is part of its terms. The transfer to the United States relies on the standard contractual clauses of the European Commission in that agreement: buttondown.com/legal/data-processing-agreement.
Email and telephone enquiries
We process your contact details, message and information you supply to respond. For enquiries about entering or performing a contract with you, the basis is Article 6(1)(b) GDPR. For other enquiries, it is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR, our interest in answering business communications.
Providing this information is voluntary. Without contact details and enough information about your request, we may be unable to respond.
Our email provider is Proton Mail: Proton AG, Route de la Galaise 32, 1228 Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, Switzerland. Proton stores our mail in Switzerland and processes it on our behalf. An adequacy decision of the European Commission applies to Switzerland.
We delete an enquiry when it is dealt with and no legal duty requires us to keep it. Commercial and business letters are kept for six years under Section 257 of the German Commercial Code (HGB) and Section 147 of the German Fiscal Code (AO).
Your rights
Subject to the statutory conditions, you may request access, correction, erasure, restriction of processing and data portability under Articles 15–20 GDPR. Use the contact details above.
To have your data deleted (the right to be forgotten, Article 17 GDPR), send an email with a data deletion request to [email protected].
Where processing relies on consent, you may withdraw it at any time for the future. This does not affect processing that was lawful before withdrawal.
Right to object
Under Article 21 GDPR, you may object to processing based on Article 6(1)(f) for reasons relating to your particular situation. We must then stop unless we demonstrate overriding compelling legitimate grounds or need the data for legal claims. You may object to direct marketing at any time.
Complaints
You may complain to a supervisory authority, particularly in the EU country where you live or work or where an alleged infringement occurred. For private-sector controllers in Bavaria, contact the Bayerisches Landesamt für Datenschutzaufsicht (BayLDA). Its complaint service is at www.lda.bayern.de/de/beschwerde.html.
